Strontium oxide is an ionic compound with strong alkalinity. In water, it can fully ionize into Sr2+ and OH- ions. Therefore, strontium oxide can react with acid to give off hydrogen, and the corresponding strontium salt and water are formed at the same time. Its aqueous solution is also an alkaline solution.
 

Because of its good electronegativity and alkaline earth metal properties, strontium oxide is widely used in electronics, metallurgy and ceramics industries.

In the electronics industry, strontium oxide can be used as a photoresistor and varistor material. In addition, it is also used in the production of picture tube coatings, high-brightness cathode ray tube electronic coatings, and aerospace communication equipment parts.

In the metallurgical industry, strontium oxide can improve the hardness, strength and corrosion resistance of steel. In addition, it can also be used to produce strontium-containing alloys, superconducting materials and glass fibers.
